The transition from Iodine Teat Dip to Chlorine Dioxide Teat dip took Lakeland Dairy Farms from a visual and costly headache to an eye catching and cost savings solution.
80 Years of Progress Leads to ProActive Solutions
Since they first started milking cows in the 1940’s, and despite labor and farmland challenges, Lakeland Dairy Farms has continued to expand their family-owned dairy over the past 80 years. The financial implications that came with their most recent expansion provided a unique opportunity for them to lead the Northeast in the innovative and ProActive Solution of Chlorine Dioxide Teat Dip.
Problem
Transitioning from a Double 12 Herringbone Parlor to a 60-Unit Rotary and Robotic spray system is paving the way to Lakeland Dairy’s long term goal of milking 1200-1300 head, three times a day. Although the future cow spray robots helped to reduce the challenges of labor
Herd Manager, Jason McFarland said, “In order to get coverage like we were satisfied with and use to seeing from dipping with the dip cup, we were ripping through iodine, and it was expensive.” Once they found their happy medium in product usage, they knew that it was a cost they were going to have to cut.
Solution
ProActive Solutions USA, LLC provides the complete chemical sanitation solutions for Lakeland Dairy through their partnership with DFA Farm Supplies. After speaking with the Animal Health & Hygiene specialist at ProActive about Cover All and the HydroBlend Chlorine Dioxide Teat Dip Units available to mix the concentrate, “it just made sense to switch.” said McFarland. The extensive knowledge, complete installation of the HydroBlend System and ongoing support provided by the ProActive Team made for a quick and smooth transition from Iodine to Chlorine Dioxide.
Results
The spray-ability, how it sticks to the teat, and cleanliness of the teat after it is wiped, were a few immediate benefits recognized between the use of Chlorine Dioxide and Iodine. Lakeland Dairy not only saw financial savings of 30%-40%, but they also found that the chlorine dioxide took the iodine stains off the ceilings and walls within the parlor. McFarland stated that, “the iodine was sticking to anything that wasn’t plastic. We have trim coil that is 22ft up in the air, and it was turning yellow. Once we went to Chlorine Dioxide, we noticed it’s not yellow anymore.”
The Lakeland Dairy and ProActive Teams are excited for future opportunities to grow their partnership. “Once we start putting more cows on, we’re going to be purchasing more chemical, which is good for you guys and good for us because it (ProActive Solutions product) cleans well,” said McFarland.
